Program Overview: What is Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM)?
Energy Trading & Risk Management (ETRM) is an instructor-led program for trading, risk, and operations teams in energy markets. It covers energy markets and trading fundamentals, ETRM systems and the trade lifecycle, deal valuation and mark-to-market, market risk measurement with VaR, stress testing and limits, and credit, regulatory, and operational risk controls. Your teams finish ready to trade with the risk picture always in view.
Training runs through working sessions with real market data: valuing deals, running VaR and stress calculations, and operating inside ETRM workflows. Ten practice sessions give instructors extensive time to review each participant's risk analysis and correct it. Scenarios use the market moves that actually hurt trading desks. The program closes with an integrated trading desk risk review as the capstone.
Energy trading losses rarely come from bad markets; they come from bad risk hygiene: mispriced deals, untested limits, exposures nobody aggregated. This program teaches teams to measure risk the way a trading desk lives it, deal by deal and book by book. The payoff is a desk that knows its real exposure before the market tests it.
The capstone is an integrated trading desk risk review: participants take a simulated book of energy trades, value every position, run VaR and stress scenarios, check limits and credit exposures, and present a risk review the way they would to a risk committee. Instructors play the committee, probing every assumption in the valuation and every gap in the controls. Teams leave with a review package that could sit on a real CRO's desk, and the discipline to produce one every day.
Through instructor-led sessions and guided hands-on labs, participants practice real workflows: capturing deals in an ETRM sandbox, marking books to market, computing VaR, attributing P&L, and responding to limit breaches. The content is tailored to your trading books and risk policies, so each cohort practices the workflows it owns every day.

Where this Training Fits in Your Team's learning path.
Energy trading and risk management sits third in this path. Your team first learns power markets and then energy forecasting, since trading decisions rest on both. This course covers trading, positions and risk control. The path ends with carbon markets, a growing commodity many energy traders now handle.

Connect Energy Trade Records to Valuation Evidence and Risk Decisions
Edstellar develops ETRM capability through market drivers, deal capture, position reconciliation, valuation, and risk controls. Teams work with sample books and sandbox trades before completing a scripted desk review. The final assessment examines consistent positions, explained P&L, and documented limit and credit decisions, without executing real trades or recommending financial positions.
- Step 01
Consult
We explore trading-support, risk, and middle-office responsibilities, identifying gaps in deal capture, position reconciliation, mark-to-market reasoning, risk limits, and counterparty controls.
- Step 02
Plan
We establish energy-market drivers before the ETRM trade lifecycle, valuation and P&L attribution, then market, credit, and operational controls within a scripted trading day.
- Step 03
Align
We align energy-risk and ETRM expertise with trading, risk, credit, and operations teams, introducing platform concepts while keeping all dealing and counterparty decisions simulated.
- Step 04
Customize
We tailor sample physical and financial books, price snapshots, and counterparty profiles to representative portfolios, documenting valuation assumptions and hypothetical risk-policy constraints.
- Step 05
Execute
Participants capture sandbox deals, reconcile positions, compare VaR methods, and draft breach memos, receiving feedback on P&L attribution, backtesting, and control escalation.
- Step 06
Evaluate
We assess the desk review for consistent trade records and valuations, explained risk measures, and documented limit and credit decisions supported by the scenario evidence.
