Program Overview: What is Ground Handling and Ramp Safety?
Ground Handling & Ramp Safety is a 24-hour program for ramp agents, ground operations supervisors, and airport safety teams. It covers the ramp environment and safety foundations, aircraft handling and servicing standards, turnaround coordination, hazard control and incident response, plus performance, compliance, and audit readiness. Everything is taught against the realities of a live ramp: noise, time pressure, and moving aircraft.
Training is instructor-led with scenario labs that recreate turnaround pressure. Participants coordinate a simulated turnaround, practise hazard spotting on a busy ramp layout, and run incident response drills for common ramp emergencies. Instructors with airside operations experience observe each drill and give direct feedback across the sessions. The program closes with a capstone: a full turnaround safety simulation under realistic time constraints.
Ramp incidents rarely come from one big mistake; they come from rushed turnarounds, missed chocks, and communication breakdowns between teams. This program teaches crews to slow down the right moments, standardise the critical steps, and speak up early, so the turnaround stays fast without becoming the next incident report.
In the capstone, each team executes a full turnaround safety simulation: aircraft arrival to departure, with servicing, loading, and hazard injects thrown in along the way. Assessors score coordination, standards compliance, and response to the unexpected. Crews finish with proven turnaround discipline they can take straight back to the ramp.
Across 24 hours of live instruction and guided labs, participants work with realistic turnaround scenarios: they map airside zones, sequence servicing tasks, run FOD and spill response drills, and coordinate a full turnaround under time pressure. The program closes with a capstone safety simulation where the team directs a complete turnaround with injected hazards, from chocks-on to pushback. Every exercise mirrors the workflows ground handling teams run on the ramp every day.

Teams that Benefit from this Ground Handling and Ramp Safety Group Training
Built for the teams that move aircraft safely on the ground: ramp agents and leads, duty managers, station safety staff, and turnaround coordinators. Content adapts to role and experience, so each cohort practices the workflows it owns, from first servicing tasks to full turnaround command.
Turn every turnaround into a safe, on-time operation
For ramp agents and leads who own the aircraft on the ground: sequenced tasks, clear zones, and calm recovery when plans slip.
Workflow friction
- Multiple vendors working one aircraft
- Safety pressure under tight turnaround windows
- Slipped tasks nobody re-sequences
How the program helps
- Sequenced ramp tasks on one shared timeline
- Safer coordination around parked aircraft
- Quicker recovery when servicing tasks slip
Practice use cases
- turnaround sequencing
- GSE staging
- safety drills
Keep every stand on schedule and under control
For duty managers and ops controllers who own the daily plan: cleaner handoffs, fewer cascading delays, and tighter stand control.
Workflow friction
- Stands that never quite fit the schedule
- Ramp and terminal teams out of sync
- Delay causes buried in noisy data
How the program helps
- Stand plans teams can actually execute
- Faster root-cause reads on turnaround delays
- Cleaner handoffs between ramp and terminal
Practice use cases
- stand planning
- delay analysis
- shift handover
Prove safety discipline, not just document it
For safety officers and auditors: rehearsed drills, clean reporting, and audit evidence built from real practice.
Workflow friction
- Procedures known but rarely practiced
- Incident reports filed too late
- Audit findings that keep repeating
How the program helps
- Drills teams have actually rehearsed
- Cleaner incident and near-miss reporting
- Audit evidence straight from practice
Practice use cases
- safety audits
- incident reporting
- drill programs
Protect schedules at the ramp level
For station managers and turnaround coordinators: reliable ground times that protect on-time performance across the network.
Workflow friction
- Network schedules with no ground buffer
- Handling quality that varies by station
- Ramp delays misclassified in reporting
How the program helps
- Ground times that protect OTP
- Consistent handling across stations
- Delay codes grounded in ramp reality
Practice use cases
- OTP protection
- station standards
- delay coding
Each department track uses the same core curriculum, with lab scenarios tuned to that team's stations, aircraft types, and operating context.
Prerequisites: Best suited to staff who work on or around the ramp: handling agents, ramp leads, duty teams, safety staff, and station coordinators. No prior formal safety training is required, and exercises adapt to each cohort's stations, aircraft types, and equipment. Familiarity with day-to-day airport work helps, but motivated newcomers keep pace.
Ramp agent to ramp operations lead
Progression follows the curriculum: safety and servicing foundations build the base, guided labs develop coordination and response skill, and the capstone simulation takes teams to advanced, integrated ramp command.
One program that grows with ground operations careers, from first ramp shift basics to confident integrated turnaround practice.
Mixed cohort, or several teams at once?
We can tailor the training to different teams, roles, and experience levels within the same program.
Certificate of Training Completion.
On successful completion, employees receive an Edstellar course completion certificate, recognizing their commitment to ongoing learning and professional development. It validates the skills they have built and motivates them to keep growing and contribute to organizational success.
Earned, not attended. Awarded on completion of all hands-on labs and the capstone project.

Coordinate Safer Ramp Turnarounds Through Sequenced Practice and Incident Drills
Edstellar develops ground-handling judgment through a realistic turnaround simulation. Participants map ramp hazards, sequence servicing, and coordinate tasks before rehearsing disruption and emergency responses. The final exercise combines operational timing with safety decisions, with feedback on critical-path management, communication, stop conditions, and the quality of the resulting debrief.
- Step 01
Consult
We review ramp responsibilities and difficulties coordinating servicing, identifying hazards, or responding to disruptions, establishing the aircraft, equipment, and station contexts participants know.
- Step 02
Plan
Ramp safety foundations lead into servicing standards, turnaround coordination, hazard response, and performance review before the complete disrupted-turnaround simulation is conducted.
- Step 03
Align
We align airside operations facilitation with handling, station, and safety roles, confirming suitable simulation arrangements and support for participants new to formal ramp-safety training.
- Step 04
Customize
Sample station layouts, aircraft servicing sequences, and weather or spill disruptions reflect familiar conditions, allowing realistic coordination without interfering with active airport operations.
- Step 05
Execute
Participants sequence servicing tasks, track the critical path, and rehearse response playbooks, receiving feedback on hazard decisions, handoffs, communication, and appropriate operational stops.
- Step 06
Evaluate
We assess the turnaround simulation for coherent sequencing, timely hazard responses, clear team coordination, and a debrief that links observed risks to practical improvements.
