Program Overview: What is Smart Cities?
Smart Cities is Edstellar's instructor-led program for government and municipal teams building connected urban infrastructure. It covers smart city foundations and urban digital ecosystems, IoT sensing and data platforms, urban data integration and analytics, citizen services and digital service design, plus governance, security, and resilience. Participants learn to plan the digital infrastructure a city actually runs on.
Training is lab-driven from the first module. Participants wire IoT sensing scenarios, integrate urban data sources, and prototype digital citizen services in guided labs using realistic city data. Instructors coach each team on data governance, security, and service design, giving direct feedback on every build. The program closes with a five-and-a-half-hour capstone where the team delivers a smart city digital infrastructure blueprint.
Smart city programs stall when sensors multiply but data stays siloed, or when a shiny dashboard never changes how services reach citizens. Technology without governance becomes expensive decoration. This program teaches teams to build the data platforms and service designs that turn connected infrastructure into working city services.
The capstone is a blueprint a mayor could fund: each team delivers a smart city digital infrastructure plan for its own city, covering sensing architecture, data platform design, priority citizen services, governance and security controls, and a phased rollout with costs. Instructors review it the way a city council and an auditor would, so the plan survives the room where real funding gets decided.
Across six modules, cohorts move from foundations to delivery. They map digital ecosystems, design sensor networks, and integrate real urban datasets into operations dashboards. Citizen service labs turn journeys into prototypes, and the governance module stress-tests architectures for security and resilience. The capstone lab asks each team to build and present a complete digital infrastructure blueprint with a roadmap and business case.

- Step 02
Plan
Smart-city foundations lead into IoT and connectivity, urban analytics, digital service design, and security before a complete infrastructure blueprint and review.
- Step 03
Align
Urban digital-services expertise supports planners, public works, policy, and technology teams, making IoT concepts accessible while preserving each role's operational and governance concerns.
- Step 04
Customize
A fictional district and sample service data provide realistic connectivity and integration scenarios without exposing residents' information or altering municipal infrastructure.
