Program Overview: What is Functional Safety: ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 Corporate Training?
Functional Safety: ISO 26262 & IEC 61508 is Edstellar's instructor-led program for automotive and industrial engineers working to safety standards. Participants master functional safety foundations, hazard analysis, and the automotive and process safety lifecycles of ISO 26262 and IEC 61508. The program closes with an end-to-end safety lifecycle lab in the capstone.
Training tracks both standards across seven modules. Participants run hazard analyses, work the ISO 26262 automotive lifecycle and the IEC 61508 process lifecycle, and practice design verification with tool qualification in guided labs. Instructors with safety assessment experience review every work product, coaching teams on what assessors look for. The final module is the capstone: execute a complete safety lifecycle in the lab.
Standards compliance collapses without method: hazard analyses done backwards, safety cases assembled at the end, and tool qualification nobody can evidence. Teams that treat ISO 26262 or IEC 61508 as paperwork produce documents, not safety. This program teaches your engineers to live the lifecycles, building the safety case as they go with verification that stands up to assessment.
In the capstone lab, each team runs the full safety lifecycle on a realistic system: hazards analyzed, requirements derived, design verified, tools qualified, and the safety case assembled and defended before reviewers. They return with assessed work products and a lifecycle discipline they can apply directly to their own safety-critical programs.
Across seven modules, your engineering team moves from safety foundations to a full safety-case capstone. Sessions use real-world safety cases, LOPA worksheets, and FMEDA exercises, so every technique transfers directly to your safety-critical systems.
Delivered as a hybrid instructor-led program, it fits around your calendar, with scheduling set along with you, and content tailored to your industry mix of automotive and process applications.

Functional Safety: ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 Course Topics and Program Outline
Seven modules follow a clear learning path from safety foundations to a full safety-case capstone. Each session builds on the last, with hands-on labs that turn standards requirements into work your engineers can defend in an audit.
Built by Edstellar with functional safety engineering practitioners
Built by engineers who certify safety-critical automotive and process systems in production, shaped around your stack and use cases.
Baseline each participant's functional safety readiness before module 01 begins
Build strong ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 foundations in instructor-led sessions for your team
Reinforce skills through guided hands-on labs on hazard analysis, FMEA, and SIL verification
Apply safety analysis skills to real-world scenarios and a capstone safety case project
A short pre-training assessment sets each participant's entry level, so the program starts where your team actually is. The rest is weighted toward hands-on practice: hazard analysis, FMEA/FMEDA, and safety case labs drawn from your team's work, not slides.

- Verification evidence stays thin
How the program helps
- Refine safety requirements early
- Qualify tools with confidence
- Produce solid verification evidence
Practice use cases
- Software safety design
- FMEDA analysis
- Tool qualification
Each cohort works through role-relevant hands-on labs, then leaves with a safety-case approach ready for day-to-day engineering decisions.
Prerequisites: This program is built for engineers and technical staff working with safety-critical systems: a background in engineering, systems design, or software and hardware development helps you get the most from the sessions. No prior functional safety experience is required; we build from foundations to the safety case, and content adapts to each cohort's industry mix.
Safety-Aware Engineer to Functional Safety Lead
The program moves engineers from safety foundations to full lifecycle ownership: hazard analysis and SIL and ASIL determination at the foundation level, design and verification work in the middle, and safety-case assessment plus a capstone at the advanced level.
Engineers grow from understanding safety concepts to owning the full safety lifecycle as the modules progress.
Mixed cohort, or several teams at once?
We can tailor the training to different teams, roles, and experience levels within the same program.
Certificate of Training Completion.
On successful completion, employees receive an Edstellar course completion certificate, recognizing their commitment to ongoing learning and professional development. It validates the skills they have built and motivates them to keep growing and contribute to organizational success.

Build Traceable Safety Arguments Across ISO 26262 and IEC 61508
Edstellar develops functional safety judgment by connecting hazard analysis with the work products of automotive and process safety lifecycles. Participants compare ASIL and SIL decisions, examine verification evidence, and construct safety arguments. An integrated case tests whether requirements, design choices, and assessment documentation support a coherent and appropriately qualified safety case.
- Step 01
Consult
We examine engineering backgrounds and gaps in hazard assessment, safety planning, or verification, identifying the automotive and process-system responsibilities represented in the cohort.
- Step 02
Plan
Functional safety foundations lead into hazard assessment, the two standards' lifecycles, verification and tool qualification, then safety-case development and integrated application.
- Step 03
Align
We align safety engineering and assessment expertise with systems, software, and hardware roles, establishing the distinctions between automotive and process safety terminology.
- Step 04
Customize
Sample vehicle functions, sensor channels, and process scenarios reflect the cohort's engineering context while retaining separate reasoning for ASIL and SIL decisions.
- Step 05
Execute
Participants draft safety plans, analyze diagnostic coverage, and present safety arguments, receiving feedback on assumptions, verification evidence, and consistency between lifecycle work products.
- Step 06
Evaluate
We review the integrated lifecycle case for traceable requirements, justified integrity targets, supported verification conclusions, and a safety argument that identifies its evidence and limitations.
