Program Overview: What is Lean Healthcare and Clinical Process Improvement?
Lean Healthcare & Clinical Process Improvement is an instructor-led program for clinical and healthcare teams removing waste and improving patient flow. Your team learns lean principles for care delivery, value stream mapping, the eight wastes in clinical settings, and flow, then builds skills to run 5S, standard work, and kaizen events. The program closes with a capstone improvement plan built on your own patient pathways.
Training begins with lean thinking adapted to healthcare, then moves into value stream mapping for clinics using the team's own processes. Instructors coach waste elimination exercises, 5S and visual management on real work areas, and standard work design for clinical handoffs. Kaizen events are simulated with full instructor coaching, and A3 problem solving is practiced on actual recurring issues. The capstone has each team draft a complete improvement plan for a real patient flow.
Clinical teams know the waste by heart: patients waiting, staff searching, forms re-done, beds blocked by paperwork. But lean fails in healthcare when it is imported from factories without translation. This program adapts every tool to clinical reality, so improvement respects care quality instead of threatening it, and teams build lasting capability behind the changes.
The capstone is a finished improvement plan for a real patient pathway in your facility. It maps the current-state value stream, names the wastes and their clinical impact, sets the 5S, standard work, and kaizen moves, and schedules the A3 pipeline for the recurring problems. Reviewed by the instructor and ready to present to clinical leadership, the plan becomes the working document the improvement team follows, turning classroom lean into measurable change in wait times and flow.
Six modules and 24 hours: lean foundations, value stream mapping, waste elimination and 5S, standard work and flow, kaizen and A3 problem solving, and a capstone improvement plan. Every module pairs concepts with a guided lab. It closes with a capstone plan your team presents and defends.

Improve Clinical Process Flow Through Lean Observation and Safe-Work Design
Edstellar connects lean methods with the patient-flow and coordination problems that healthcare teams encounter. Participants identify waste, map patient pathways, and examine work-area organization before designing standard handoffs and A3 countermeasures. The final clinic improvement plan connects flow and safety considerations, with feedback on process evidence, measurement, ownership, and a practical rollout sequence.
- Step 01
Consult
We explore care-workflow familiarity, patient-flow bottlenecks, and recurring handoff or work-area problems to identify where clinical, quality, and nursing teams need lean practice.
- Step 02
Plan
We establish healthcare lean concepts before pathway mapping and 5S, then connect standard work, simulated kaizen, and A3 problem solving in the clinic improvement plan.
- Step 03
Align
We align healthcare process-improvement expertise with clinical operations, quality, and care teams, using appropriate sample pathways and simulated activities rather than changing patient care during training.
- Step 04
Customize
We adapt mock clinic pathways and handoff cases to familiar care settings, using de-identified process information to examine waits, movement, and operational safety constraints.
- Step 05
Execute
Participants calculate pathway lead time, design visual boards, and develop standard work and A3s, receiving feedback on observation quality, countermeasure reasoning, and process measurement.
- Step 06
Evaluate
We assess the improvement plan for supported flow problems, workable handoffs, explicit safety considerations, and metrics and owners that allow the proposed changes to be reviewed.
