Program Overview: What is First-Time Manager Essentials?
First-Time Manager Essentials is a 14-hour program for new managers making the leap from individual contributor to team leader. Participants learn how to own the new role and reset relationships, how to build trust and run effective one-to-ones, coaching and feedback essentials, and delegation, motivation, and decision making for first-time leaders.
The program is built on practice, not theory. Participants rehearse one-to-ones with realistic direct reports, deliver feedback in coached scenarios that get progressively harder, and work through delegation and motivation cases drawn from real new-manager struggles. Instructors with leadership experience review every interaction, correcting the habits new managers carry over from being top individual performers. The program closes with a personal first-90-day leadership action plan.
New managers fail in predictable ways: avoiding hard conversations, doing the team's work instead of leading it, and managing like the contributor they used to be. Organizations promote strong performers and leave them to figure out leadership alone. This program gives new managers the core skills and a concrete plan, so the transition succeeds instead of stalls.
The capstone is a first-90-day leadership action plan: each participant maps their team's needs, their own development gaps, and a sequenced plan for trust-building, feedback rhythms, and early wins. They return to their teams with leadership already planned, not improvised.
The program covers five essentials: owning the new leadership role and building credibility, trust and one-to-ones, coaching and feedback, delegation, motivation, and decision making, and a capstone where each new manager builds a first-90-day action plan for their own team.
