Program Overview: What is Quality by Design?
Quality by Design is Edstellar's instructor-led program for healthcare quality, clinical, and operations teams who want safe and compliant care processes designed in, not inspected in. Participants cover QbD foundations for healthcare, critical quality attributes and design space, FMEA risk assessment tools, process controls and monitoring, and validation documentation for regulatory readiness. Six modules across 24 hours turn quality from an audit scramble into a design discipline.
Training works through workshops and guided exercises on realistic care scenarios. Participants define critical quality attributes, map design space, run FMEA risk assessments, and build process controls and statistical monitoring plans with the instructor's guidance. Every exercise ends with direct feedback on whether the design would hold up under scrutiny. The program closes with a capstone in which each participant designs a QbD plan for their own service line.
Care teams often chase quality after the fact: rework, incident reviews, and documentation assembled for the inspector. This program teaches teams to design quality into the process from the start, with risks assessed, controls built in, and evidence captured as work happens. Each technique is practiced hands-on, so it survives contact with the realities of a working ward.
The capstone is a complete QbD plan for the participant's own service line: critical quality attributes defined, design space mapped, FMEA findings addressed, process controls and monitoring specified, and validation evidence documented. They present the plan, defend its risk reasoning, and return with a document their service line can implement instead of starting over from a blank page.
Across six modules, your team moves from quality design foundations to a capstone QbD plan. Sessions focus on real-world use cases from your service lines, so every technique transfers directly to daily quality practice. Guided labs give each participant hands-on time with risk assessment tools, control plans, and monitoring dashboards, while the instructor coaches your team through the same workflows they will run on the job.

Quality by Design Course Topics and Program Outline
Six modules move your team from QbD foundations to a capstone design plan, with guided labs on FMEA, process controls, monitoring, and validation documentation.
Built by Edstellar with quality management practitioners
Built by practitioners who design and validate quality systems in production, shaped around your stack and use cases.
Baseline each participant's quality management experience and design thinking readiness before module 01 begins.
Core sessions teach QbD principles, design space, and risk assessment methods your team applies in guided labs.
Hands-on labs build FMEA models, monitoring plans, and control strategies on realistic healthcare workflows.
Validate and document a full QbD dossier, then present your capstone design plan with instructor feedback.
A short pre-training assessment sets each participant's entry level, so the program starts where your team actually is. The rest is weighted toward hands-on practice: guided labs on live quality workflows, plus a capstone QbD plan your team can present.

Key Skills and Outcomes Your Team Will Gain
Your team will leave with the competency to design quality into care processes from the start. Each outcome is practiced in guided labs and demonstrated in the capstone QbD plan.
Define critical quality attributes
Translate patient needs and safety goals into measurable design attributes for any clinical workflow.
Map a design space
Set process windows and tolerance limits that keep care delivery inside safe operating ranges.
Run FMEA risk assessments
Identify failure modes, score risk, and prioritize mitigations on real service-line processes.
Design control strategies
Choose monitoring points, limits, and responses that hold processes within design intent.
Build monitoring dashboards
Track critical parameters with statistical methods and alerts that catch drift early.
Document validation evidence
Assemble traceability matrices and design dossiers that satisfy regulators and auditors.
Present a QbD plan
Deliver a complete quality-by-design plan from the capstone, ready to defend and implement.
Teams that Benefit from this Quality by Design Group Training
This program is built for clinical, quality, and operations groups who design and run patient-care workflows, from quality officers to service-line managers. Content adapts to role and experience, so each cohort practices the workflows it actually owns.
Care processes designed to be safe from the start.
Quality teams embed prevention into workflows, reducing defects before they reach patients.
Workflow friction
- Reactive fixes after safety events
- No shared design standard
- Inconsistent risk documentation
How the program helps
- Design safety into care workflows
- Standardize risk assessment practice
- Document controls audit-ready
Practice use cases
- FMEA drills
- Design reviews
- Control plans
Proactive safety built into every care step.
Safety teams shift from incident response to prevention, using design-space thinking on high-risk processes.

How the program helps
- Hold processes in tolerance
- Automate control monitoring
- Stabilize outcomes site-wide
Practice use cases
- SPC labs
- Dashboard builds
- Process tuning
Evidence packages regulators accept first time.
Compliance teams compile traceability and validation records that stand up to external scrutiny.
Workflow friction
- Fragmented quality records
- Audit findings on design history
- Manual traceability
How the program helps
- Link needs to evidence
- Produce audit-ready dossiers
- Close audit findings fast
Practice use cases
- Dossier drills
- Traceability labs
- Mock audits
Each cohort leaves with a draft QbD plan and reusable risk assessment templates for daily use.
Prerequisites: Clinical, quality, operations, and compliance professionals benefit most, including those new to structured quality design. Familiarity with care delivery or quality tools helps but is not required. No prior QbD experience is needed, and every lab adapts to each cohort's services and systems.
From Quality Fixes to Quality by Design
The course starts with QbD foundations, establishing the shift from inspection to prevention. Practice modules then define critical quality attributes, run FMEA risk assessments, and build process controls and monitoring. The arc closes with validation documentation and a capstone QbD plan your team presents with instructor feedback.
Teams graduate from reactive fixes to prevention-driven design, with control plans and validation evidence they can defend.

Where this Training Fits in Your Team's learning path.
Quality by design comes after GMP and design of experiments, because it applies statistical experimentation within a regulated pharma setting. Your team learns to build quality into products and processes, then manages that quality over time through pharmaceutical quality systems and CAPA.
