Program Overview: What is Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) in Safety?
Human & Organisational Performance (HOP) in Safety is a corporate training program for safety leaders, operations managers, and supervisors ready to move past blame-based safety. It covers HOP foundations, systems thinking, learning from everyday work, restorative incident learning, and leading the HOP response. Participants learn to build safety from how work actually happens, not how procedures imagine it.
The program is delivered as instructor-led training grounded in real operational stories. Guided sessions have teams map how work really gets done, run learning-team exercises, and practice restorative conversations after realistic incident scenarios. Instructors with operational safety experience facilitate every exercise across six practice sessions and challenge blame reflexes directly. It concludes with a capstone where teams run a Live Learning Team on a real operational problem.
Traditional safety programs chase zero incidents by adding rules after every failure, yet serious events keep happening and workers stop reporting. Blame drives learning underground, so the same latent conditions survive. This program teaches leaders to treat human error as a starting point for learning and to fix the systems that set people up to fail.
The capstone is a Live Learning Team: participants facilitate a real learning-team session on an actual operational challenge from their site, with instructors observing and coaching the facilitation itself. Leaders leave having run the method for real, with a facilitation guide and the credibility to introduce HOP to their own workforce.
Six modules and 24 hours: HOP foundations, systems thinking, everyday work learning, restorative reviews, supervisory response, and a capstone learning team. Every module pairs concepts with a guided lab. It closes with a capstone where your team plans and runs a real learning team exercise, presented for instructor review.
Delivery is hybrid across virtual and onsite sessions, scheduled around your calendar. Cohorts train as one group or split into batches, with session materials and lab guides included for every participant.

Where this Training Fits in Your Team's learning path.
Human and organisational performance comes third, after behaviour-based safety and incident investigation. Your team first observes behaviour and investigates events, then learns why good people make errors. The final step uses that understanding in safety leadership and culture.

Build Safety Learning Practices Around Work Conditions and Frontline Experience
Edstellar develops HOP capability by examining how everyday work differs from written expectations. Participants map operational pressures, practice worker interviews, and conduct restorative incident reviews before rehearsing supervisory responses. The final learning-team exercise is reviewed for useful questions, conditions-focused findings, and improvement actions that address the work system rather than assigning blame.
- Step 01
Consult
We explore how teams currently review incidents and near misses, identifying gaps in understanding work-as-done, interviewing workers, or recognizing system pressures behind outcomes.
- Step 02
Plan
HOP foundations lead into systems thinking, everyday-work learning, restorative incident review, and leadership response before the complete learning-team exercise is planned and facilitated.
- Step 03
Align
We align operational safety facilitation with EHS and supervisory roles, establishing a respectful learning environment and a shared approach to examining work without blame.
- Step 04
Customize
Anonymized operational stories and fictional near misses reflect familiar pressures, allowing participants to investigate adaptations and capacity without naming workers or revisiting identifiable allegations.
- Step 05
Execute
Participants map drift, rehearse worker interviews, and lead incident discussions, receiving feedback on trust-building questions, conditions-focused reasoning, and the relevance of proposed system improvements.
- Step 06
Evaluate
We assess the learning-team presentation for a clear account of work conditions, evidence from inquiry, and improvement actions that address the operational pressures identified.
