Program Overview: What is Human Factors Engineering?
Human Factors Engineering is a corporate training program for product engineers, UX designers, and systems engineers who design things people must use correctly. It covers human factors foundations, anthropometry and workspace layout, human-machine interface design, usability evaluation and error analysis, and cognitive ergonomics. Participants learn to engineer the human out of the failure equation.
The program is delivered as instructor-led training with studio-style design exercises throughout. Guided sessions have teams measure and model workspaces, prototype interfaces, and run usability evaluations on each other's designs with structured scoring. Instructors with human factors engineering experience critique every design across six practice sessions and teach teams to read error data like engineers. It closes with an Integrated Human Factors Design Review capstone.
Products and workplaces get designed for an imaginary user who reads manuals, never rushes, and makes no mistakes. Real users do the opposite, and the resulting errors get blamed on carelessness instead of design. This program teaches engineers to design for actual human behavior, measured and modeled, not assumed.
The capstone is an Integrated Human Factors Design Review: teams bring a real product, interface, or workspace from their work, run it through anthropometric, usability, and error analyses, and present a redesigned solution with quantified improvements. Engineers leave with a design review discipline they can run on any project and a portfolio-grade case study.
Across six modules, teams move from ergonomic foundations to interface modeling, usability evaluation, and cognitive ergonomics for safety-critical workflows. Guided labs cover workspace layout, control screen prototyping, alarm redesign, and a capstone design review, so participants leave with tested, review-ready design improvements for their own products.

Connect Human Factors Evidence With Practical Workspace and Interface Redesign
Edstellar develops human factors engineering capability through a combined workstation and interface case. Participants model reach and clearance, prototype controls, and test usability before examining alarms and cognitive workload. The final design review is assessed for evidence-based priorities, clear ergonomic reasoning, and a coherent relationship between observed errors and the proposed redesign.
- Step 01
Consult
We review product and workspace responsibilities, identifying gaps in anthropometric design, interface hierarchy, or analysis of operator errors and cognitive workload before practice.
- Step 02
Plan
Human factors foundations lead into workspace modeling, interface prototyping, usability and error analysis, and safety-critical workflows before the integrated design review is presented.
- Step 03
Align
We align human factors expertise with engineering and design roles, confirming suitable modeling and prototyping tools while building foundations for participants new to ergonomics.
- Step 04
Customize
Sample control panels, workstation dimensions, and alarm sequences reflect familiar operator tasks, retaining comparisons across reach, clearance, display hierarchy, and cognitive demand.
- Step 05
Execute
Participants prototype interfaces, run timed usability tasks, and reprioritize alarms, receiving feedback on ergonomic assumptions, observed errors, task demands, and the strength of redesign evidence.
- Step 06
Evaluate
We assess the design review for supported ergonomic and usability findings, coherent workspace and interface changes, and a prioritized plan that explains how redesign addresses observed risks.
