Program Overview: What is API Design with GraphQL and OpenAPI?
API Design with GraphQL & OpenAPI is a 24-hour program for back-end and full-stack developers, platform engineers, and architects building consumable APIs. Across six modules, participants study API design foundations and styles, GraphQL schema design, OpenAPI specification authoring, resolvers and mutations, and versioning, security, and error design. Every pattern is practiced against realistic service scenarios, so designs translate directly to production APIs.
Training is hands-on: guided labs have participants drafting GraphQL schemas, authoring OpenAPI specifications, and wiring resolvers and mutations against live data. Instructors coach small cohorts through schema evolution, contract-first workflows, and secure error handling, giving live feedback on design quality. Practice moves from single-endpoint design to full API surfaces with versioning and governance. The program closes with a capstone in which each participant designs and documents a production-ready API.
APIs designed by accident accumulate breaking changes, inconsistent errors, and documentation nobody trusts. Consumers guess at behavior while versioning turns into folklore. This program teaches teams to design contracts first: GraphQL schemas and OpenAPI specs that make APIs predictable, secure, and easy to adopt.
Each participant presents an API they designed like a product, contract, security, versioning, docs. Your consumers stop guessing and start integrating.
Six modules and 24 hours: API design foundations, GraphQL schema design, OpenAPI authoring, resolvers and data fetching, security and versioning. Every module pairs concepts with a guided lab, so each technique is practiced. It closes with a capstone in which the team designs, documents, and presents a production-style API. Delivery is hybrid across virtual and onsite sessions, scheduled around your calendar. Cohorts train as one group or split into batches, with session materials and lab guides included for every participant.

Where this Training Fits in Your Team's learning path.
API design comes after your team can build basic REST endpoints. This course sets the contract with GraphQL schemas and OpenAPI specifications; security testing and enterprise API management then follow, so well-designed APIs are also safe and governed once they are published.

Create Clear API Contracts with GraphQL and OpenAPI Practice
Our API design training helps teams make deliberate choices about contracts, data access, and evolution. Participants design GraphQL schemas, author OpenAPI specifications, and connect resolvers while examining pagination, security, and error behavior. A documented API project brings these decisions together for review from both service and client perspectives.
- Step 01
Consult
We discuss the APIs your teams design or consume, focusing on contract ambiguity, data-fetching difficulties, and compatibility expectations across client applications.
- Step 02
Plan
We compare API styles before designing schemas and specifications, implementing data fetching, and addressing security, errors, and evolution in the final project.
- Step 03
Align
We align instruction with backend, full-stack, and platform responsibilities, checking existing API experience and the tools available for contract and resolver labs.
- Step 04
Customize
We use a representative service domain to explore meaningful schema relationships, mutation behavior, pagination needs, and changes that could disrupt API consumers.
- Step 05
Execute
Participants resolve specification lint issues, fix an N+1 query problem, and test error contracts with instructor feedback on consistency and client usability.
- Step 06
Evaluate
We review the documented API for schema clarity, specification accuracy, efficient fetching, security decisions, and a defensible approach to breaking changes.
